s Today, I’m posting in Melanie’s Motherhood series on why I love my mom. There are many, many more reasons why I have the best mother, but I chose 36. One for each year she’s been my mom. 1. She loves me for me. 2. She always left notes in my lunchbox. 3. She loves celebrating holidays in a big way even though our dinner table isn’t full. 4. She taught me manners. 5. She loves to sing as loudly in the car as I do. 6. Friends were always welcome at our home. 7. She’s still happily married to my dad. 8. She preferred I play outdoors instead of in front of the tv. 9. For taking care of me when I was sick. 10. She apologizes when she is wrong. 11. She endlessly gives to others without expecting anything in return. 12. She takes care of Ella like her own. 13. She is gracious. 14. She has a great sense of humor. 15. She always sees the bright side of things. 16. She knew what it was like to wear braces before it was cool. 17. She is generous. 18. She makes the best chicken n’ dumplings! 19. She’s a fighter. Where there is a will there is a way, and she always figures out the way. 20. She’s a great friend. 21. She made me work the family business as a teenager. 22. She’s a foodie. 23. She tries new things. 24. She made me write thank you notes as a child. 25. She encouraged me to go to college. 26. She took a car full of teenage girls on roadtrips. 27. She let me drive her car on the backroads. 28. She let me make messes. 29. She let my outdoor puppy sleep in the bed with me. One time. 30. She believes it’s never too cold for ice cream 31. She has amazing eyelashes. 32. She doesn’t take life for granted. 33. She is forgiving. 34. She has the best surprises. 35. She is humble, but has a strong sense of self. 36. She loves hearing my big ideas.
She is a daughter, sister, grandmother, wife, friend and for me, I have the blessing to call her Mom.
The Kentucky Derby is tomorrow and such anticipation is building…..I have some inspiration for you today if you are choosing to have a gathering of friends to watch. I *love* Derby. I’ve only been once and I don’t know if that even counts because I didn’t see one horse! I was in the infield, which is like a big Spring Break party. If I ever go back, I will have a seat and wear a really fabulous hat.
Mini hot browns. Recipe here.
Jockey silk cookies made by Martine’s. When I ordered these, I looked up the Derby contenders for this year and chose the silks that really stood out to me. That’s usually how I place my bets too! Whoever has the prettiest silks is a winner to me. Of course they are too easy to resist and Ella had to try one.
Menu items: Country ham and biscuit, fresh cut veggies with dip, mini hot browns, strawberry picnic queens, mini Kentucky nut pies, jockey silk cookies, and chocolate horse suckers. You can’t have a Derby party without mint juleps (I personally think they taste like mouthwash and don’t partake), so I’ll just be drinking my drink of choice from a fancy mint julep cup to get in the spirit instead! Have a great weekend! Show 3 comments Love, love, love this! Love the Derby and all the tradition behind it. And of course Ella had to have the *pink* cookie! Have a good Derby day! Loved all your Derby party ideas! So fun! I love the Derby and I’ve gone a few times. Every single time we’ve gotten stranded in the rain and I’ve been extremely grateful for my hat. The last couple years I was on our Derby Party PTO fundraiser committee and we’ve had mini hot browns on the menu each time. A Kentucky girl introduced me to the recipe. So tasty. I agree with you on the mint juleps, but I adore the cups! I love your party ideas Elizabeth. I have always wanted to go to the Derby and wear a pretty hat…one day! Today I have a recipe to share with you that is appropriate for the upcoming Derby weekend, but would be good at any time as well. A hot brown sandwich was originally created at The Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY in 1926 and have been a signature Kentucky item since. Ingredients Preparation
Show 1 comment I’ve heard the name of these before, but oddly enough have never seen a recipe for them. What is even crazier is I adore tomatoes and have never eaten one of these yummy looking sandwiches. Will have to give it a try! And by the way, that platter is gorgeous! This week is one of the most anticipated weeks in Kentucky. This Saturday is the Kentucky Derby. Every year I look forward to watching the races. I especially love looking at the hats and fashion. Do you plan on watching this Saturday? This week I’m dedicating the blog to posts that revolve around the Derby. First post? A DIY horseshoe filled with tissue roses. I’ve used tissue roses with other projects before. The first being Ella’s party when we did a pinata that appeared to be a large pom of roses. The second was for a wreath that was a ‘W’ to represent the birthday girls name. Tissue roses are quite easy to make and very inexpensive. To make the roses, you will only need three items: tissue paper (I used three packs for this project), scissors and a stapler. For this particular project, I also used a hot glue gun and a white piece of cardboard. Begin by unfolding tissue paper and cut at the given folds. Each section will be about 4″ wide. Fold each section in half. Begin by wrapping the loose end around your fingers. (I really need a macro lens so you can see the details better. Sorry in advance for the blurriness.) When doing this step, the less perfect the better. Once complete, staple together to secure the rose. Continue for each section of paper until you end up with something looking like this: For this next step I used my hot glue gun so the roses would stay put. Begin making rows of flowers and attaching to surface. My “surface” is a white piece of posterboard that I cut into a horseshoe shape.
When working with tissue roses, keep in mind they don’t have to be perfect. More than likely you are going to be placing them close together so they look like a mass of roses. My final project turned out like so. You’ll get to see how I’m using it by the end of the week! *Note: You could also make this with, of course, real roses if you had a generous budget. Or you could also use silk as well. *A red poster board would be beneficial to help conceal the white that may peek through.

Wow! You look JUST LIKE YOUR MOM!! People tell me that all the time too and I always take it as the greatest compliment but you really look just like her when she was your age! At least you know what you’re going to look good when you get older (:
Love your list! I love the close bond you and your mom share. My mom is my best friend too (:
Oh my, Danielle is right, that looks just like you except with darker hair! And look at those shoes, can’t be white high-tops from the Talking Tree!! Lillee and Hanks still wear them. Sweet post.
Such a super sweet tribute to your mom! I hope you had a blessed Mother’s Day today. We spent ours at middle child’s college graduation ceremonies.
